about

Ever been in Brussels? Then you will agree that this is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. I can’t think of any other city where so many cultures, languages and religions meet on such a small surface and despite a few minor issues every now and then, all these people live peacefully together. The white Belgians have a lot more trouble with each other.

Noordstation is the city’s northern railway station. If you choose the station’s southern exit, you’ll see glass covered office buildings and expensive stores, streets with heavy traffic, business men in costumes, old ladies in fur coats, and families happily shopping. If you choose the other exit, you enter a district where hookers and shady bars fight for attention and people from a zillion colorful cultures have homes that others consider unfit for habitation.

Two different worlds connected by a railway station that itself is a combination of cold modern architecture and piss stinking corridors from an era long gone.

I remember a didgeridoo player busking in the station hall while a group of kids sitting oppositie of him listened to a kind of Arab techno music on a ghettoblaster. Sheer cacophony! Also around were the usual bunch of people on big railway stations: junkies waiting for their man, beggars searching for money, illegal immigrants looking for a little luck… Noordstation tries to capture this particular atmosphere.
